Panel recommends Fort Hood be renamed for San Antonio general

, a highly respected career soldier who grew up on the King Ranch and died six years ago in San Antonio.would be named after a commander many described as a charismatic, fearless and innovative tactician, rather than remain a namesake of John Bell Hood, a controversial Confederate general.

The Naming Commission, created by Congress, unveiled its recommendations for renaming nine Army posts at a virtual press conference. The list will be forwarded to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who has the authority to act on them. “While we anticipate that renaming activities would take place around that time frame, the role of our commission is strictly to provide recommendations, not execute activities on behalf of DoD,” said Lawrence Romo, a commission member who lives in San Antonio.

Dwight D. Eisenhower, the president and World War 11 supreme allied commander in Europe, was recommended as the new name for Fort Gordon, Ga., while Gen. Hal Moore, made famous in the movie “We Were Soldiers,” was recommended for Fort Benning, Ga.In all, there are 32 Medal of Honor recipients from the Alamo City
