by Annie Ernaux and for some inexplicable reason, as if there weren’t enough pages in the mix, I just started on an advance copy of the thumpingly enormous Swedish bestseller,Who is your favourite author and why do you admire them?
I don’t have a favourite author, but I really enjoy anything by David Sedaris. Like Roald Dahl, he has a prurient sense of humour and a keen eye for weirdness. I’m also interested in how he mines his personal life keenly and intimately – sometimes showing his most favourite people in terrible light – yet still has a private life.
My study, which is part of the sitting room. The location is not ideal: it’s by the front door, so everyone comes to see me each time they stomp over the threshold and as they are very small, my visitors, it’s very hard to then get rid of them. But it’s wonderful to have a space of my own, especially as I’m surrounded by bookshelves and thus, all the books I love I have been compared to Pippi Longstocking, as I’m always tumbling over myself and I’m irritatingly forgetful.
