Two weeks ago, I met a retired veteran from Mission, Texas. He was at first skeptical of Cisneros, a young candidate from Laredo, but after talking to him about Cisneros’s policy plans, he was supportive. He shared that he was suffering from lung cancer, and that if it wasn’t for his military-provided insurance, he would be dead.
This is reality for many people struggling with a parent, sibling, or other relative suffering from chronic illness, and when paired with the unfortunate reality of being undocumented, receiving medical care becomes a distant, unobtainable dream. Again, for the people in the back: Latinx voters don’t care about a candidate’s ability or inability to speak Spanish or their superficial, cutesy stories. We care about health care, immigration, and climate justice. Latinx voters need candidates to show up in our communities, show us their stances, and make hard asks for our vote.
