Pandemic puts up to 86 million children at risk of poverty

South African children wait for food from the Masiphumelele Creative Hub run by Yandiswa Mazwana in Masiphumelele, Cape Town, South Africa, on May 25, 2020. With winter fast approaching feeding schemes have to cope with adverse weather and increased risks to health. The Masiphumelele Creative Hub has been catering for some of the most vulnerable children in the informal settlement from the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, with food security being a major issue during lockdown.

THE economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic could push as many as 86 million more children into poverty by the end of 2020, a joint study by Save the Children and Unicef showed yesterday. That would bring the total number of children affected by poverty worldwide to 672 million, an increase of 15% over last year, the two aid agencies said in a statement.
