I've spent the past 25 years writing about the world of home entertainment technology--first at Home Cinema Choice magazine, where I became Deputy Editor, and for the past 20 years on a freelance basis.

, Panasonic is finally bringing its TVs back to the US. Yes, no longer are American AV fans forced to look on in frustration as the good folk of Europe lap up the latest fruits of Panasonic ’s legendary TV picture quality while the US Panasonic TV cupboard remains stubbornly bare. No less than three of Panasonic ’s new TV ranges are set to launch in the States this year - and if the 65-inch 65Z95 flagship model is anything to go by, the brand is very much back with a vengeance.

Fire TV, though, is just so much more… international. A truly global platform familiar through one route or another to almost anyone who lives where streaming is a thing. A platform born and bred in the US to go with Panasonic’s US TV relaunch, and backed in terms of investment and the power to do content deals by one of the world’s biggest companies.

The MK II version of the HCX Pro AI Processor, meanwhile, ups the extent to which it uses AI to identify the type of content being watched and then tweak various picture elements, from colour and contrast to relative sharpness, in order to optimise playback. Particular new highlights of the new processor are a revamped 4K Remaster Engine aimed at improving the look of streamed video , and a new system for reducing colour banding when showing HDR colour blends.

Colors look vibrant but beautifully controlled and endlessly nuanced. Black shades and tones are out of this world; not just because they look infinitely deep, without a hint of low-contrast greyness, but also because the subtlest shades of grey or faintest bits of light in the darkness are rendered so immaculately, without a hint of noise or gradation instability. While OLED screens can usually do deep blacks well, handling ‘near black’ light conditions is actually quite challenging.

Most people who invest in a 65Z95 will, of course, be all about the set’s accurate modes. But I still respect any TV maker that puts as much effort into balancing and controlling their ‘bright room’ modes as Panasonic has with the 65Z95.In typical Panasonic style, the 65Z95 takes its gaming duties as seriously as its film and TV playback. On the feature side, two of its four HDMIs can take in the 4K/120Hz feeds now available from the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and premium PC cards.
