A house in Pacific Palisades, California, was left largely unscathed by the recent Palisades Fire, but later split in two by a landslide caused by mud and debris. Fire officials warn of ongoing risks of mudslides and land instability, especially with anticipated rainfall.
A mudslide and wildfire debris have caused a house in the Pacific Palisades to partially collapse. The incident occurred Thursday morning in the 1700 block of Castellammare Drive, close to Pacific Coast Highway and Sunset Boulevard. The house, situated precariously on the hillside, appeared to have been pushed off its foundation by the accumulation of dirt and debris.
While nearby homes suffered damage and destruction from the recent Palisades Fire, this particular residence remained largely untouched by the flames. The timing of the landslide is unclear. Firefighters, however, warn that similar hazards could develop under other homes in the area. Mudslides and land instability will persist as a concern, particularly if significant rainfall occurs. The absence of vegetation to absorb water increases the risk of landslides and flash floods during rainstorms. LA County Fire Chief, Scott, stated that the department is actively mapping properties to identify potential dangers associated with mudslides and instability. He emphasized that the mapping process is well underway, covering over a third of the affected properties. 'We're not out of the woods yet,' Scott cautioned. 'We're going to have to deal with rains and mudslides that come, as well.'
