Palisades Charter Elementary School students displaced by the Palisades Fire begin classes at a temporary location.
Days after losing her home in the same fire that destroyed her Los Angeles elementary school, third-grader Gabriela Chevez-Muñoz resumed classes this week at another campus temporarily hosting children from her school. Palisades Charter Elementary School students and their parents arrived at their new school, the Brentwood Elementary Science Magnet school in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
The move comes after the devastating Palisades Fire ravaged the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, causing extensive damage to both the elementary and high school campuses. The fire not only destroyed buildings but also displaced families, including Gabriela's, who were forced to seek refuge elsewhere. The sight of students arriving at their new temporary school was both heartwarming and poignant. Some children, like Gabriela, were visibly shaken by the recent events, clinging to their parents with tears in their eyes. Others, however, seemed determined to carry on with a sense of resilience and optimism, eager to reconnect with their classmates and teachers. Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho greeted the students upon their arrival, offering words of support and reassurance. He emphasized the importance of community and resilience in the face of adversity, assuring the students that the district would do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition and a safe learning environment.
