As Palestinians commemorate the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, officials highlight continued Israeli military operations, settlement expansion, and displacement affecting daily life in Gaza, West Bank, and neighboring regions.
As Palestinians commemorate the 59th anniversary of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, known in Arabic as the Naksa or setback, officials say Israel's military offensives, illegal settlement expansion, and displacement policies continue to shape daily life across Gaza , the occupied West Bank , and beyond.
The anniversary comes amid what Palestinian leaders describe as one of the most severe periods since the war, with Israel waging a genocidal war in Gaza since October 2023, expanding military operations and illegal settlements in the West Bank, and conducting a large-scale assault in Lebanon since March 2, 2025. According to Palestinian authorities, the war in Gaza has killed tens of thousands and caused widespread destruction, while in the West Bank, 1,168 have been killed, 12,666 injured, around 23,000 arrested, and 33,000 displaced since October 2023.
In Lebanon, official figures report 3,516 killed and 10,674 injured since March 2. The June 1967 war ended with Israel occupying the remainder of historic Palestine, including the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, as well as Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and Syria's Golan Heights. Although Israel withdrew from Sinai under the 1979 peace treaty, it continues to occupy the West Bank and Golan Heights, and annexed East Jerusalem in a move not recognized internationally.
The war displaced an estimated 300,000 Palestinians and marked the beginning of large-scale illegal Israeli settlement projects. By the end of 2025, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, there were 645 illegal settlement sites and military bases in the occupied West Bank, including 151 settlements and 350 outposts, with a settler population of 778,567.
Palestinian officials argue that Israeli policies since 1967 have focused on settlement expansion, land confiscation, and imposing new realities on the ground, but have failed to break Palestinian determination to achieve national rights.
'The June 1967 war represented another stage in the displacement of Palestinians and the confiscation of their land after the 1948 Nakba,' said Wasel Abu Yousef, a member of the PLO Executive Committee. He added that Palestinians now face unprecedented dangers due to the war in Gaza, escalating violence in the West Bank, and efforts to undermine prospects for an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The annual commemoration of both the Nakba and Naksa reflects the failure of attempts to erase Palestinian national identity despite decades of war and occupation
