A Pakistani national has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for running a smuggling ring that funneled Iranian-made weapons to the Houthis, resulting in the deaths of two U.S. Navy SEALs.

A Pakistani national, Muhammad Pahlawan, has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for his involvement in a sophisticated smuggling operation. This operation, orchestrated to supply advanced Iran ian-made weaponry to the Houthis , a militant group in Yemen, tragically resulted in the deaths of two U.S. Navy SEALs. Pahlawan was convicted on June 5, 2025, by a federal jury on multiple charges.

These charges included conspiring to provide material support and resources to terrorists, specifically in aiding Iran's weapons of mass destruction program, which is closely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Furthermore, he was found guilty of conspiring to transport explosive devices to the Houthis, with the knowledge that these weapons would be used to inflict harm. Adding to the gravity of his actions, Pahlawan also threatened his crew members, compelling them to lie and endangering their lives and the lives of their families. The sentencing underscores the severity with which the U.S. government views any support provided to terrorist organizations and the catastrophic consequences that can result from such activities. \The details of the case reveal a complex operation that spanned several months. U.S. Central Command Navy forces, operating from the USS Lewis B. Puller, initiated a boarding of a small vessel on January 11, 2024. This team included Navy SEALs and members of the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team East. The boarding team encountered 14 individuals on board, including Pahlawan. During the search of the vessel, the team seized an array of Iranian-made advanced conventional weaponry. This included components for ballistic missiles, components for anti-ship cruise missiles, and a warhead. The Department of Justice (DOJ) stated that the type of weaponry found on the vessel was consistent with arms frequently used by Houthi rebel forces in their attacks targeting merchant and U.S. military ships operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These attacks intensified following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. During the boarding, Pahlawan attempted to deceive the U.S. forces, instructing other crew members to provide false information and threatening them. This incident resulted in the tragic deaths of two Navy SEALs, Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher J. Chambers and Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Gage Ingram. Ingram fell into a gap between the vessel and the SEAL watercraft, and Chambers jumped in to attempt a rescue, sadly both lost their lives in the encounter.\The investigation revealed that Pahlawan’s actions were part of a larger, organized smuggling operation. From August 2023 through January 2024, he collaborated with two Iranian brothers, Shahab Mir’kazei and Yunus Mir’kazei, who were affiliated with the IRGC. Their goal was to smuggle materials from Iran to various recipients, including the Houthi rebel forces in Yemen. Pahlawan was directly involved in multiple smuggling missions, carrying cargo from Iran to the coast of Somalia. He then transferred the cargo to another vessel during nighttime ship-to-ship operations, attempting to avoid detection. He also worked with the Iranian brothers to prepare the vessel for these missions, receiving coordinates from them for the ship-to-ship transfers. In exchange for his role, Pahlawan received payment. Following the incident, the U.S. government issued arrest warrants on February 11, 2024, for Pahlawan and three other foreign nationals: Mohammad Mazhar, Ghufran Ullah, and Izhar Muhammad. All four men were in possession of Pakistani identification cards. They were subsequently transferred to the Eastern District of Virginia. Furthermore, Mazhar, Ullah, and Muhammad were also charged with providing materially false information to U.S. Coast Guard officers during the boarding, pertaining to the vessel's crew and cargo. This case highlights the challenges of combating international arms smuggling and the tragic human cost associated with such illicit activities
