A Pakistani national is accused of trying to carry out assassinations on current and former U.S. government officials.

Asif Merchant , also known as "Asif Raza Merchant ," was charged in a plot to carry out political assassinations on U.S. soil, according to the Justice Department.

That person reported Merchant’s conduct to law enforcement and became a confidential source .Prosecutors stated the plot was disrupted before it could be carried out. Merchant allegedly tried to hire assassins that were undercover FBI agents. During the meeting, Merchant began planning potential assassination scenarios and quizzed the undercover agent on how he would kill a target in the various scenarios because there would be "security all around" the person.

Merchant told them he wanted them to steal documents, arranging protests at political rallies, and for them to kill a "political person."
