Pakistan captain Shan Masood won the coin toss and elected to bat in the first test against England. Pakistan had been searching for its first test win at home in more than 3-1/2 years since last beating South Africa in early 2021.

“We asked for a good cricket wicket,” Masood said at the toss. “We want to change things, we want to get back on track and we’re looking to do so with this group of players.” Gus Atkinson, who had a sensational home season against West Indies and Sri Lanka, will be playing his first overseas test and Chris Woakes returns to test fold after 2-1/2 years.
