Pakistan Catholics hail appointment of first nuncio to UAE

Church leaders in Pakistan have welcomed the appointment of a 54-year-old Lebanese archbishop by Pope Francis as the first apostolic nuncio to the United Arab Emirates.

Archbishop El-Kassis has been serving as nuncio in Pakistan since November 2019 and is expected to reach Abu Dhabi next month. “Finally the nunciature is being upgraded to ambassador level. It will further cement diplomatic relations and improve understanding between the Holy See and the United Arab Emirates. This is a good beginning, a very positive sign for the New Year,” he said.
