Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s foundation, Eat. Pray. Love., funded a fully renovated recreational space Lockwood STEAM Academy in Oakland

Amid the delirium, Christopher Helfrich, Eat. Learn. Play.’s chief executive, noticed one girl was visibly distressed, tears welling in her eyes. Ayesha Curry, a cookbook author and Bay Area restaurateur, is focused on nutrition and food insecurity, seeking to provide high-quality meals to those with the least access to them. But despite the fear that the Warriors — and the Currys — would leave Oakland behind, the foundation remains rooted in The Town. “It was dreary and sad,” Hoover’s principal, Lissette Averhoff, told The Examiner. “It didn’t really inspire you to feel good about yourself.” Ayesha recalled helping a group of kindergarteners who couldn’t reach the lunch counter. “California’s affordability crisis is one of our own making — the decisions we made limited the creation of housing we need,” said California Gov. Gavin Newsom, The City’s former mayor, in a statement. “Nowhere is this fact more evident than in San Francisco. This report is an important first step to address the decades of issues that have held back San Francisco’s ability to build more housing.”

They include what appears to be a functional elimination of The City’s “publicly-initiated discretionary review,” a controversial feature of San Francisco planning that allows neighbors to weigh in on plans if they are compliant with “existing planning and zoning standards.” If it fails to heed the state’s warning, the state could also refer the issue to the state Attorney General’s Office and ask a court to impose financial penalties.

Rich Hillis, The City’s planning director, told The Examiner in a statement that the review amounted to a “backing of the State as we continue to move forward with aggressive housing reform.” The team will consist of state and local law enforcement officials, who will investigate fatal opioid-linked overdoses as homicides. The task force is expected to be fully up and running by early next year, according to a press release issued by Newsom’s office Friday.

Newsom and law enforcement officials believe the task force’s investigation of opioid-related deaths will help trace the source of deadly drugs and enable the prosecution of drug kingpins.
