In that moment, she led with courage and tenacity. She was a beacon of hope and a source of healing. While we know she went on to do great things in the years to come, in that time, she cemented her position as an extraordinary leader of our city. In fact, she bought the band sweaters that we wore so proudly. Think about what it meant to a group of public school kids to be the focus of that kind of attention and support from the mayor of a great city like San Francisco. A little over two years later, when the pandemic hit, she immediately reached out to me before I could reach out to her. She talked to me about the hard decisions that needed to be made. She told me to focus on doing what it takes and doing the right thing — to do what’s necessary for the city.
