THE southwest monsoon or 'habagat' is over and the northeast monsoon or 'amihan' is about to begin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced on Thursday.

'Recent analyses showed that a significant weakening of the southwest monsoon has been observed over the past few days. Moreover, the strengthening of the high-pressure system over East Asia has led to a gradual change in the weather patterns,' Pagasa Officer-in-Charge Nathaniel Servando said in a statement. With the development, Servando said that the country is now in a gradual transition to the northeast monsoon season or 'amihan' and this may be apparent in the coming weeks.

It is characterized by moderate temperatures, little or no rainfall in the central and western part of Luzon and Visayas and a prevailing wind from the east, the state weather bureau said. With the on-going El Niño phenomenon, Pagasa said that there is an increased likelihood of below-normal rainfall conditions, which could bring negative impacts such as dry spells and droughts in some areas of the country.
