MANILA, Philippines— The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) declared on Tuesday the start of the northeast monsoon season or commonly known as amihan.

MANILA, Philippines— The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration declared on Tuesday the start of the northeast monsoon season or commonly known as amihan.Nathaniel Servando, Pagasa administrator, said that the high pressure area over Siberia has strengthened, leading to a strong surge of northeasterly winds.

He said successive surges of northeasterly winds are expected in the next two weeks, leading to an increase in atmospheric pressure and cooling of surface air temperature over the northern portion of Luzon. 'The development of these meteorological patterns indicate the onset of the northeast monsoon season,' the Pagasa chief said. This means that the northeasterly wind flow - wind that blows from the east - is expected to be more dominant, bringing cold and dry air.
