David Hicks Jr. announced his verbal commitment to Texas A&M on Wednesday afternoon during a ceremony broadcast live on ESPN2, choosing the Aggies over Oklahoma, Oregon, Alabama, Miami, Michigan State and Texas.
Hicks is the No. 1 defensive lineman and No. 12 overall player in the country for the 2023 class, according to 247Sports. The star senior is also the No. 1 overall player in the state of Texas. Texas A&M and coach Jimbo Fisher had the 24Hicks is the second five-star recruit in this class to commit to Texas A&M, joining Denton Ryan’s Anthony Hill, the No. 1 linebacker in the country. He also becomes the third Houston-area player to make his pledge to the Aggies, following Paetow teammate and four-star linebacker Daymion Sanford and Atascocita three-star defensive lineman Samu Taumanupepe.Hicks transferred to Paetow from Allen ahead of his senior season when his father accepted a position as an assistant under new Panthers head coach Lonnie Teagle. Hicks posted 88 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 13 sacks for Allen in 2021. Paetow made the move to Class 6A this season after winning the 5A Division I state championship last year. The Panthers are 3-2 overall and 2-1 in District 19-6A action. They have a bye this week before playing No. 5 state-ranked Katy on Oct. 6.
