Padres manager Mike Shildt says pitcher dealing with a family matter
Yu Darvish #11 of the San Diego Padres looks on during the first inning against the New York Mets at Citi Field on June 16, 2024 in New York City. The veteran right-hander is going on the restricted list Padres manager Mike Shildt announced on Saturday afternoon.
“He’s dealing with a personal matter involving his family,” Shildt said. “Clearly we want to respect his privacy. He wants to make sure everybody knows he’s physically in a good spot. He’s still working on his craft. But he is going to step away right now and deal with some things on a personal level, and we’re going to love and support him. He’s part of the Padre family. The restricted list is also indefinite.
“We have no timeline on it,” Shildt said. “The only we want to do, the primary thing, rather, we want to do is just making sure Yu feels loved and supported by his Padres family.” Darvish has not pitched since May 29, as he hit the injured list with a groin strain and saw his comeback halted late last month with elbow inflammation.
It’s the second time that Darvish, 37, has been on the injured list this year, as he missed a little more than two weeks in April with a neck strain. He was due $16 million this season and is under contract through 2028 via the six-year, $108 million extension signed before the start of the 2023 season.
