Trade just hours before 2022 season opener in Arizona gives Padres another option to close in Taylor Rogers
to acquire pitching of a different kind and another player to put in their thin outfield.
While the Padres have also been searching for a veteran bat, they spent the spring looking to supplement their bullpen as well. Rogers saved 30 games for the Twins in 2019 and nine in the short ’20 season. The 31-year-old has a 3.15 ERA and 361 strikeouts in 314 2/3 career innings. He was an All-Star in 2021, named to the American League roster as a replacement. He was largely used in the seventh and eighth innings last season but did save nine games. He will be a free agent after this season. His twin brother, Tyler, is a reliever for the Giants, who the Padres visit next week.Rooker, 27, has hit .212/.299/.
That puts them a little more than $1 million under the competitive balance tax threshold of $230 million, though their payroll will fluctuate as they continue to make moves. The CBT is not calculated until the completion of season, and that is when the Padres would have to pay a 30 percent tax on any overage.Paddack, 26, has a 4.21 ERA in 61 career games .
