Acquired from the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations in January 2025, Marinaccio has become a reliable bullpen arm for San Diego, posting a 3.24 ERA over his time with the team. A native of Toms River, New Jersey, Marinaccio grew up in a community passionate about baseball, home to the 1998 Little League World Series champions led by Todd Frazier.
He recalls the supportive environment and the joy of playing baseball in a town where the sport is deeply ingrained. Marinaccio played college baseball at the University of Delaware, where he transitioned from a starting pitcher to a reliever-a move he embraced to help his team win. This shift ultimately boosted his velocity and visibility, setting the stage for his professional career. Marinaccio was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2017, but the path to the majors was gradual.
He spent several years in the minor leagues, where the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 threatened his career. With the minor league season canceled, Marinaccio used the extended break to overhaul his training regimen. Working with Yankees coach Daniel Moskos and trainer CJ Appenzeller, he focused on plyometrics and new workout routines that significantly increased his fastball velocity. This transformation, he admits, likely saved his career.
He notes that many minor leaguers were on release lists at the time, but his improvements allowed him to return as a different pitcher, eventually making his MLB debut. The pandemic became an opportunistic turning point, demonstrating how adversity can lead to growth. After parts of three seasons with the Yankees, where he posted a 3.22 ERA over 114 1/3 innings, Marinaccio was designated for assignment in 2024.
The Padres saw potential and acquired him, and he has since become a key part of their bullpen. Marinaccio reflects on the support from family and friends, especially during his time with the Yankees, as he grew up a fan of the team.
