Padres second baseman likely headed to Lake Elsinore to continue rehab work before weekend activation
San Diego Padres Xander Bogaerts hands a ball to a fan during their game against the Miami Marlinsat Petco Park on Monday, May 27, 2024 in San Diego, CA. collected roughly two dozen at-bats on the field at Petco Park on Tuesday afternoon, mostly with a one-handed follow-through. He ran through infield drills at second base, too, as he nears a return from his fracture left shoulder before the All-Star break arrives.“I feel good; I’m getting there,” Bogaerts said after coming off the field.
Given everything he’s doing, Bogaerts expects to return to the Padres for a final weekend series before the All-Star break, even with an extra four-day break sitting around the corner.“I wouldn’t say I’m impatient,” Bogaerts said of his time so far on the injured list. “We’re playing really well right now. I want to be there, but I feel like I’m a couple games away from meeting up with the team.
“We need another position,” Shildt said with a laugh. “ … We just need to be smart about it and communicative with the players and matchups and, yeah, there’s going to be some real productive player that’s not going to be in the lineup to start the game and then figure out the best spot for them to be used when situations arise.”, who is on the injured list with a stress reaction in his right leg, will undergo a follow-up CT scan in the “next week or so,” Shildt said.
