Kyle Higashioka starting for the first time since Monday as Padres host the San Francisco Giants

“I’ve had a lot of help from several people in the clubhouse, just learning the pitchers,” Diaz said through interpreter Pedro Gutierrez. “That’s the primary goal. I was able to do a great job with Martín Pérez. But yeah, just getting into rhythm as soon as possible and getting ready to contribute.” Added Pérez: “I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a good guy. We’re from the same country and I’m happy for him because he’s here and I know he can help us to win a lot of games. The way that he calls the games and the way that he got with my rhythm and timing every time, everything was pretty good. He knows how I like to pitch and that’s good when you have a catcher behind home plate who knows you very well.
Time will tell if a Diaz-Pérez pairing will be a staple of the catching rotation or if Diaz’s duties continue to grow as the Padres near the regular-season finish line. Higashioka is enjoying a breakout season on offense, but his 549⅔ innings behind the plate could surge past the career-high 642 innings he caught last year and Camupusano’s production at the plate has fallen off considerably as he’s waded through his first full season in the majors .The 24-year-old rookie has struck out 16 against seven walks in 19⅓ innings since making his debut in May. He made four starts then and returned to the team on Aug.
