Padres playing first games of the season against the Arizona Diamondbacks
The Padres begin a three-game series in Phoenix, their first games this season against the defending NL champion Diamondbacks, with Manny Machado back at designated hitter. Friday’s first pitch is at 6:40 p.m. Machado, who is coming off offseason elbow surgery, had played four of his last six at third base, including Wednesday’s game heading into Thursday’s off-day. Machado is 5-for-24 with a double, four RBIs and six strikeouts since returning from paternity leave.
Second baseman Xander Bogaerts is back in the lineup after an off-day on Wednesday and center fielder Jackson Merrill remains in the six-hole despite going 0-for-19 in six games on the Padres homestand. A road game could help as Merrill still leads the majors with a .438 batting average on the road.
