Juan Soto (back) returns to Padres lineup for the first time since Sunday
Soto was 0-for-4 on Sunday to snap a 25-game on-base streak but was in the lineup on Tuesday until he was a last-minute scratch due to left mid-back tightness.Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim will again serve as the leadoff hitter after going 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and five RBIs Friday, extending his hitting streak to a modest four games .
Third baseman Manny Machado will bat third, followed by Brandon Drury, who will play second base as Jake Cronenworth takes a seat against the Royals’ left-handed starter. Trent Grisham is also out against the left-hander as Jose Azocar will start a second straight game — in center and in the nine-hole — after going 4-for-5 with three runs scored on Friday.
Josh Bell will serve as the DH and bat fifth, followed by Wil Myers at first base, left fielder Jurickson Profar and catcher Austin Nola. Friday’s 13-5 win allowed the Padres to build a 2 ½-game lead on the Brewers in the race for the No. 6 seed. Here is how the NL wild-card race stands entering Saturday:
