Jackson Merrill the lone lefty in the Padres' lineup against Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez
Jackson Merrill’s first off day this season was against a left-handed pitcher. He’s been off the last two games with a tight right groin, much to the 21-year-old rookie’s chagrin, but the bat has played so well that a healthy Merrill is back in the lineup Saturday as the Padres’ only left-handed hitter against hot Phillies’ left-hander Ranger Suarez. “You could have gone a couple different ways and just had all righties,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said.
“I was like, ‘Hell yeah,’” Estrada said of the opportunity. “I love pitching. Anything they need me to pitch, I’m in for whatever they need.” Estrada struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit, an 86.4 mph single to left that allowed one of Musgrove’s inherited runners to score. The appearance was Estrada’s first in the majors since walking two and allowing a hit in a scoreless inning in the Seoul Series.
