The Angels' Shohei Ohtani making first start as a pitcher against the Padres; Padres DFA Nelson Cruz among their moves before Tuesday's game
facing the Padres for the first time as a pitcher this afternoon at Petco Park, only newcomers have history with the Angels’ two-way star.leads that group with six plate appearances, so he’s as qualified as any to deliver a scouting report.
“He’s good,” Bogaerts said Monday night. “Depends on which one you get. I’ve faced him when he’s 95 and I’ve faced him when he was like 100. So it depends on which one you get on that specific day. Somedays his slider is really good and really tight, and other days you kind of see it better. I don’t know how much he’s throwing that split. Sometimes he gets blisters, but you have to see which one you get.Ohtani is certainly going good.
He not only leads the majors in home runs hit, he’s tops on the mound among qualifying starters with 12.0 strikeouts per nine innings and 5.7 hits per nine innings. Ohtani has struck out 22 over his last 13 1/3 innings and features the kind of mix – a 97 mph fastball, a 95 mph sinker and five varieties of breaking balls – that has flummoxed the Padres.in OPS against power pitchers and Ohtani is almost certainly a power pitcher.“Every win is important,” Bogaerts said.
