Team's opening-day starter sidelined at least until end of month; Padres recall reliever Logan Gillaspie from Triple-A
A couple days after appearing to dodge a big blow with first baseman Jake Cronenworth's balky calf, the Padres will have to navigate their first significant injury situation of the season. Right-hander Yu Darvish was placed on the injured list Wednesday with neck tightness. The move is retroactive to Monday, meaning the soonest Darvish can return is April 30. Darvish, who has a 4.18 ERA over 23⅔ innings through five starts, was scheduled to start Saturday against the Blue Jays at Petco Park.
With an off day Thursday, they could move the rest of their starters up a day at the front end and start Joe Musgrove on Saturday on four days' rest. However, the Padres' next day off is May 2, so they will have to use a fill-in starter or bullpen game by Tuesday. The team called up right-handed reliever Logan Gillaspie on Wednesday.
