Padres tie it in the ninth inning, score 3 in the 10th to beat Pirates 9-8
San Diego Padres’ Xander Bogaerts, left, knocks the ball out of the glove of Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal, center, to score from third on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Merrill off relief pitcher Colin Holderman during the tenth inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024. They played carelessly at times, but they tightened up at the end, tying the game in the ninth and scoring three times in the 10th to beat the Pirates 9-8.
The Padres certainly did not play the clean baseball that characterized their post-All-Star break run of 12 victories in 14 games, best in the major leagues. They trailed from the bottom of the sixth until Merrill deposited a second ball on the grassy hillside beyond center field.
