Padres recall Jhony Brito to helped out taxed bullpen, option starter Randy Vásquez to Triple-A

Brito was sent down last month with the intention of building up his pitch count in case he was needed as a starter, but the right-hander served exclusively out of the bullpen in 25 appearances for the Padres at the start of the season. He posted a 4.35 ERA in 41⅓ innings while pitching in long relief but also in higher-leverage one-inning stints a few times when needed.
The pending return of Joe Musgrove from the injured list, Monday at Petco Park against the Pirates, meant Vásquez was expendable.The 25-year-old right-hander has a 4.63 ERA in 17 starts this season. His ERA was 3.46 over his past eight starts, a span in which he went five innings and allowed two or fewer runs five times.
Due to a rain delay that knocked starter Dylan Cease out of Tuesday’s game after one inning and Wednesday’s game going 10 innings, the bullpen worked a total of 16⅓ innings in the Padres’ sweep of the Pirates.It gave Cease extra rest and set him up to start here Sunday and push Musgrove’s planned start back a day. That slots Musgrove, who will be on a pitch limit for a few starts, between Cease and Michael King, who have consistently gone six innings or more throughout the season.
