Manager Mike Shildt is entering the final leg of the two-year deal signed last offseason; pitching coach Ruben Niebla’s deal expires after the World Series
San Diego Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla walks back to the dugout after a mound visit during the ninth inning against the Chicago White Sox at Petco Park on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024 in San Diego, CA. The Padres have leaned on the strength of their pitching staffs in forging postseason runs in two of the last three seasons. The 2024 team, in particular, returned in the NLDS after cutting some $90 million in payroll from the 2023 flop.
“That’s going to be something that we look to do here over the course of the next couple weeks, is trying to see if we can line up with Mike and the coaching staff,” Preller said, “ and having a group that’s shown that they can get results and did a good job … and making sure that that people feel rewarded. … We have some people that are together in that area, and from a coaching standpoint, that are able to come back and kind of build and grow on what we did this year.
Shildt signed a two-year deal after Bob Melvin left to manage the Giants last offseason. His postgame comments after the Padres’ NLDS exit touched on the coaching staff’s hand in creating the identity that Preller referred to Monday, as well as perhaps Shildt’s own job in perpetuating it as the leading voice on the coaching staff.
“He obviously enjoys it here, wants to be here, but I know his focus also is just go get better,” Preller said. “And if you do that, then I think he has a lot of trust and faith that things … from an organization standpoint, that we’ll figure some things out there.” “He’s capable of doing a lot,” Preller said. “We’re hoping it’s with the Padres and I feel confident he likes his time . He really loves the organization, loves it here, loves the city. And that’s conversations for the next couple of weeks. And my guess is we’ll line up on something there.”Among the early items to cross off the to-do list after the completion of the World Series is Kim’s $8 million mutual option. But his season-ending labrum surgery on his right shoulder is a complicating matter.
