Gary Sanchez had been playing every day, either at catcher or DH but that will change now that Nelson Cruz is off the injured list
hit the injured list with a right hamstring strain. The Padres’ new catcher has since served as the DH two more times as the Padres, looking to keep his hot bat in the lineup one way or another, have started him in seven straight games.
Cruz went 5-for-16 with a double, a home run and three RBIs in four rehab games with Triple-A El Paso. His hamstring is good, he said, and he’s hoping a more consistent stroke in the majors will return with consistent at-bats. The 42-year-old Cruz owns 462 home runs over his 19-year career, including three so far this season in what is his first true year as a role player. Both the Padres and Cruz are hoping his playing time over the weekend in El Paso provides the runway he needs to hit the ground running when his bat is called upon.
