In Padres' bullpen, Nick Martinez lookin got balance staying built up with pitching when needed
Nick Martinez had a red, Padres Fourth of July bucket hat pulled low over his ears as he watched Sean Manaea warm up in the bullpen for Monday’s start, as each member of the rotation does before every game. He’s also not quite a full-fledged member of the bullpen yet. After all, Martinez has yet to pitch on fewer than three days’ rest this year, which would peg him for an appearance as soon as Thursday behind … Joe Musgrove.
It’s anyone’s guess exactly when and how Martinez will be used next, but it helps that he has been rather efficient of late, needing just 32 pitches to earn the save with three shutout innings on June 29 and coming back on three days’ rest to throw 35 pitches on Sunday. In his first MLB action since 2019, Scott inherited a bases-loaded jam and stranded all three runners via a pop-up and a flyball to left. The next inning Scott — who played the last two years in Japan, signed a minor league deal with the Padres just after the lockout ended and headed to Triple-A El Paso — struck out the side.
