Padres notes: Manaea to miss lefty-slugging Cardinals; Soto getting hot at right time

Sean Manaea to get another rest, won't face team that clubs left-handers; Juan Soto has first three-hit game with Padres

The Padres will skip left-hander Sean Manaea again in the upcoming series against the Cardinals. The left-hander returned to the rotation Thursday after missing one turn because he was struggling. He allowed the Diamondbacks two runs in five innings, and the Padres felt a part of the reason for his improved command and increased velocity was the extra rest he had.

The plan is for him to start during the series that begins Friday in Colorado. The move also allows Manaea to miss the Sept. 27-29 series against Dodgers, who have scored 23 runs in 12 2/3 innings in his three starts against them this season. The Cardinals lead the major leagues with an .821 OPS against left-handed pitchers. Designated hitter Albert Pujols is tied for second in the majors with 12 homers off lefties. In 69 more plate appearances against righties, he has seven homers. Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt leads the National League with a 1.010 OPS, and third baseman Nolan Arenado ranks third at .904. Both bat right-handed and fare better against lefties as well. Mike Clevinger will start Tuesday against the Cardinals with left-hander Blake Snell pitching Wednesday and Joe Musgrove going Thursday.Snell’s 21 starts are six fewer than Musgrove has made. And while Musgrove has struggled at times over the past two months while going on shorter rest than earlier in the season, he has actually had just as many good start working on four days’ rest as he has with five-plus in that span. “This time of year, with what we’re going for, it’s kind of like an extra adrenaline boost,” he said. “It feels like you could be going on three days’ rest and you still would find a way.”Besides the three straight victories and improving their standing in the National League playoff picture, perhaps the biggest thing to come from the just-completed series against the Diamondbacks was that Juan Soto appears to have emerged from his slump. “It feels better,” Soto said Sunday after going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and a walk. “And it feels more better as we get into the end of the season where we’re gonna start the playoffs and start getting hot at that time where everything matters.” Soto fell to 3-for-48 over a 15-game skid by going 0-for-4 in Thursday’s series opener here. The major leagues walk leader wasn’t even getting on base all that much, posting a .286 on-base percentage in that span. After going 2-for-5 and driving in three runs Friday, he talked about focusing on going the other way in batting practice and that his doing so in the game was a good sign. He had been pulling the ball to right field almost 40 percent of the time since joining the Padres, well above his career average.“Whenever I start hitting the ball to the other way, it’s starting to go well,” he reiterated Sunday after his first three-hit game with the Padres. “Tonight, I didn’t hit it to the other way, but tells you that I’m feeling better, that I’m being patient, I’m seeing the ball better.” Soto, who was batting .246/.408/.485 when he was acquired in an Aug. 2 trade with the Nationals, is batting .221/.386/.366 with the Padres. “If he heats up, which we all expect him to,” manager Bob Melvin said, “this is going to be a much more difficult lineup to navigate.”
