Rookie MacKenzie Gore strikes out nine over a career-high seven innings in the Padres' 4-2 win over the Pirates

MacKenzie Gore had hovered in the five-inning range in each of his first five starts in the majors. He threw six innings in his previous start in San Francisco. As the 23-year-old rookie walked off the mound on Sunday with a career-high seven shutout innings, Padres manager Bob Melvin assured him there were longer days coming.

Melvin’s reasoning — after a shortened spring training, after Gore’s own starts and stops while working through mechanical kinks at the alternate site and extended spring training over the last two years — needed no explanation whatsoever. That his 2-0 lead afforded on Jurickson Profar’s home run off the top of the wall in right in the fifth inning evaporated in a span of five batters, costing him a chance to improve to 4-1 on the season, did little to sour his mood.

He stopped short of saying he’s essentially progressing through his own spring training at this point.
