Padres now looking for an extra arm to start season, figuring out what that pitcher's role will be; Rougned Odor signs minor-league deal
The loss of a pitcher who averaged almost six innings per start over the past two seasons is causing the Padres to rethink their plan to use a six-man rotation at the start of the season.
Whatever the role, there is a spot available on the opening-day roster or as an early call-up for a pitcher who can eat innings that was not available when the week began.Ryan Weathers, the Padres’ first-round pick in 2018. The left-hander allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings Wednesday. He has options remaining, which means he can easily toggle back and forth between Triple-A and the majors without clearing waivers.
Adrian Morejón, a lefty who had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and threw just 34 innings out of the bullpen last season. He is still seen as a starter at some point, but won’t be more than a part-time starter this season because of innings limitations. He can be optioned as well.
