Padres 2023 first-rounder Dillon Head visits Petco Park a day after walk-off hit for Lake Elsinore Storm

Dillon Head played the part of the hero on Sunday at low Single-A Lake Elsinore, coming through with a walk-off single in the midst of the Storm’s postseason push.“It definitely gave me a better feeling on the way here,” the 18-year-old Head said, “being able to end on that note.”To be clear the Petco Park trip for the Padres’ first-round pick is an annual tradition and Head’s was on the calendar before Sunday’s walk-off single.

With short-season circuits no longer part of the minor league system, it’s an aggressive jump, to be sure, and Head’s numbers certainly reflect a young high school hitter trying to close the gap against college-aged pitchers as he’s hitting .194/.297/.194 over eight games with the Storm. “Everybody throws hard and has good stuff,” Head said. “It’s just about capitalizing on pitchers mistakes. Obviously the more and more you go up, the more command they have. So it’s really just being able to execute off their mistakes.”
