Former top prospect Anderson Espinoza is back with Padres on a minor league deal after back-to-back Tommy John surgeries, a trade to the Cubs and an emotional major league debut

Most of the onlookers strolling through the Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday morning stopped at Field 5 to watch Joe Musgrove, Adrián Morejón and Michel Báez throw live batting practice to the likes of Manny Machado, Juan Soto and Ha-Seong Kim.

To be clear, the obstacles now stacked in front of Espinoza are no less formidable than when the organization traded him to Chicago outfielder Jake Marisnick in July 2021. Anderson has posted a 6.03 ERA over 128 1/3 innings in the minors since losing five seasons to consecutive elbow reconstructions and the pandemic.

Anderson learned soon after electing free agency that the Padres were interested in a reunion. The team that helped him through the darkest moments of his life made all the sense in the world as Espinoza charted a path forward this offseason.
