Armed with a new cutter, right-hander eager to contribute out of the bullpen after injuries scuttled past few seasons
Michel Báez can count on one hand the number of players that pre-date his signing with the Padres in December 2016. There’s José Castillo, who arrived two years earlier as part of the three-team deal that netted Wil Myers. There’s Eguy Rosario, who signed on his 16birthday in August 2015. And there’s fellow Cuban Adrián Morejón, who signed a few months earlier, and Pedro Avila, who arrived via trade a couple weeks before Báez finalized his deal.Shoot, given the way A.J.
It wa just Baez’s second Cactus League appearance this spring. He allowed a home run in his first inning of the spring in February. Since then, he had been working in back-field games — specifically on a cutter he added in January to diversify a repertoire that had been heavy fastball-change-up and a variations of a breaking ball that hadn’t played well in the majors.
It was a good introduction , but Báez spent most of 2020 at the alternate site, was lost to Tommy John surgery the following spring and has since swapped aspirations to start for a desire to contribute anyway he can out of a bullpen. “Right now, it feels 100 percent,” Soto said. “I’m good. I never lost my power. They’re just being careful with it.”
