Padres were in need of another starter because of concerns their rotation could not fill enough innings

The team reached an agreement on a deal with starting pitcher Michael Wacha, two sources confirmed. He joins a rotation that had five starters penciled in for the beginning of the season but lacked true depth.

Terms of the contract are not known. Wacha was known to be seeking two years. Completion of the deal is pending a physical for the 31-year-old right-hander who last season posted a 3.32 ERA in 127 1/3 innings. The Padres discovered going with a six-man rotation in 2022 to be beneficial to the health and performance of their starters and relievers.

This season, the Padres appear set atop the rotation with Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove and Blake Snell. Nick Martinez, however, threw just 106 innings in ’22 and is moving back to the rotation after spending half of last season pitching out of the bullpen. Seth Lugo, who was signed in the offseason, last threw 100 or more innings in 2018.This story is developing and will be updated.
