The two teams and Eddie Vedder, a one-time resident of San Diego and Seattle, a Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famer and Pearl Jam frontman, have announced that the Padres and Mariners will play annually for the Vedder Cup, beginning this year. Since the start of interleague play — which lined up neighboring teams like the Dodgers and Angels in Los Angeles for the “Freeway Series” — the Padres and Mariners have been linked as “rivals,” leading fans to nickname the series the “Vedder Cup.” Vedder moved to San Diego County as a kid and later relocated to grunge-rock mecca Seattle, where he joined Pearl Jam as the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist. Fittingly, the multi-Grammy winner will have input on the design of a Vedder Cup trophy, which will include a guitar provided by the rock legend. The trophy will be unveiled before the first matchup between the two teams. The Padres will host a three-game series against the Mariners at Petco Park in May and will play a three-game series in Seattle in August . In the event of a series tie, run differential will determine the winner. The highest exit velocity of a recorded hit for either team will serve as the second tiebreaker. As part of the “Vedder Cup,” which will include a theme-ticketed game in each city during the series, the Padres and Mariners will make annual donations to the EB Research Partnership, a nonprofit charity founded by Eddie and Jill Vedder to fund research for Epidermolysis Bullosa. “This West Coast showdown will create some cool, fun and memorable moments for our fans while bringing meaningful awareness to EB research,” Padres CEO Erik Greupner said in a release. “We can’t wait to see this rivalry series grow and look forward to battling the Mariners for the Vedder Cup.”Beginning in 2025, the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners will officially brand their interleague series the “Vedder Cup,” for Eddie Vedder, the Pearl Jam frontman who lived is San Diego as a kid and later moved to Seattle.Boise State bounces SDSU from Mountain West Tournament, puts Aztecs back on the bubble30 motorcyclists have bikes impounded following freeway stunt rides For decades, homes couldn’t be built in this area of Chula Vista.
