Padres can clinch playoff berth Sunday with win or Brewers' loss; Juan Soto, Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado hit home runs
Whether they play in what is colloquially called “October” in baseball — as in, the playoffs —hinges on just one more result.
As has happened a few times over the past couple weeks of what has sometimes been a slog to the finish, there was a shift in the playoff race dynamic. It happened suddenly. Even before the sixth inning had ended at Petco Park, by which time the Padres had extended their lead to 4-1, the Marlins had finished off the victory.
The Phillies hold the sixth playoff spot, two games behind the Padres and a game ahead of the Brewers. Clevinger, who began the season late and has pitched with a sprained right MCL all season, did not allow another baserunner until Josh Harrison lined a single to left field with one out in the sixth inning. Between the two hits, Clevinger retired 16 straight batters on a total of 50 pitches. Andrus followed with a line drive single to left field before Clevinger retired the next two batters to finish his night.
