Blake Snell is a far batter pitcher in the season's second half; team believes offseason work has set him up for better results right away in 2023
The Padres’ forgotten starter seems to be in a good place, ready for a different kind of a start to a season.
A somewhat arbitrary but also fairly clear dividing line for his career has been July 19 each season. In 83 starts before July 19, he has a 4.10 ERA while allowing a .231 batting average and walking 11.9 percent of the batters he has faced. In 76 starts made July 19 or after, those numbers are 2.65, .208 and 8 percent. The difference in all three categories is even larger over the past two seasons.
It’s remarkable, really, that the only pitcher on the staff with a Cy Young award is so seldom mentioned and is the only starter virtually guaranteed to be on another team in 2024.th“Just more consistency to it,” Snell said, “and I’ll be fine.”So here he is.
“I think the offseason helps you mentally,” Snell said, grudgingly. “It helps you believe like mentally you can dominate.”People in the organization use words like “engaged” and “confident” when talking about Snell. Anyone who listens to Snell speak after games knows he focuses on process far more than results. His quotes after going 4 2/3 innings are often indistinguishable from when he goes six innings. It certainly is not as if he is generally happier after August starts than April ones.His best explanation for the discrepancy between his early and later results is that he gets better the more he pitches.
