Early start to season has forced the Padres to get ready early, but they don't have to make all their decisions by their first series
The Padres face a unique circumstance as they decide on and prepare their pitching staff for an early start to the season. They are rushed, and yet they have time. Because they open the season March 20 and 21 against the Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea, the Padres started ramping up their starting pitchers before spring training began. They had to line up at least the pitchers they expected to start the first two games pretty much from the time camp opened.
“But I think we'll have a pretty good handle on it.” Shildt compared the way pitchers could be used in the two games against the Dodgers to a playoff series. “The situation is a little more unique,” he said, “and it does provide some wonderful opportunities to be creative with how we use our pitching.” The Padres play their Cactus League finale on Wednesday and depart for South Korea that night with a week until their season opener.
