Padres manager stressing good through team's struggles is both genuine and purposeful at early stage of his tenure and a long season

Good morning, Are the Padres a good team? No. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But certainly not now. Are they a bad team? No. Probably not. Right? It’s a confounding time for everyone involved with, invested in or otherwise following the Padres’ ups and downs through 46 games this season. They lose five in a row, they win four in a row and eight of 11. They take two of three from the Cubs and Dodgers in succession and get swept by the Rockies.

Shildt’s smiling front with the media belied the scene in the clubhouse, which was more morose than after any loss this season. And it’s not like Shildt has no footing on which to make his positive stand. Only the most obstinately jaded observer would not acknowledge the Padres have shown real signs of being a burgeoning playoff contender. He may be proved right. His team might be good. And, sure, if it is not, he will eventually have to say so.
