Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes has been amazing as well; Jackson Merrill has just played a lot more and done a lot more
The good news for Paul Skenes is that it certainly seems he has a long career ahead of him with much success ahead. Maybe a Cy Young award or two or more.Just like we don’t have any idea what Jackson Merrill will accomplish over the next decade or so. Maybe MVP awards. Sure seems he is a special talent with rare makeup, a combination required for long-term stardom.We don’t have to put down Skenes or diminish the Pirates rookie’s incredible season.
Merrill has started all but 13 of the Padres’ 132 games. He is batting .288 with 19 home runs, six triples and 21 doubles. His 3.7 WAR entering yesterday ranked 22nd in the major leagues. That was half a point higher than any other NL rookie and 0.8 higher than Skenes. He might truly not care about the NL Rookie of the Year award. But he’s doing everything he can to win it.I was not planning on doing a newsletter today, because I do them only after games I cover. of yesterday’s game when he said, “Jackson swings. Hits it in the air. Deep to right field! He has done it again!”Tony Gwynn Jr. summed it up when his first words after Jesse had described the moment and its magnitude: “He’s as cold as ice.
Merrill is batting .333 with a 1.158 OPS in late-and-close situations. The OPS is eighth highest in the majors, third highest among those with a least 50 plate appearances in late-and-close situations.
