Why did Mike Shildt got to Tanner Scott in the ninth? How does Jackson Merrill do what he does so often? How is Jurickson Profar?

Padres rookie Jackson Merrill, right, celebrates with Manny Machado as he returns to the dugout after hitting a home run off Pirates closer David Bednar in the ninth inning Wednesday. The Padres’ 27th come-from-behind victory of the season was that kind of comeback.

“We just kept fighting,” Manny Machado said. “We just kept fighting. We didn’t give up. It was a tough one. … We just kept fighting, man. All around good baseball.”King was not sharp with his fastball or changeup and was burned by his defense but found a way through five innings and left with the Padres leading.

“You gotta turn the page,” Machado said. “You know, things like that happen. And it’s just, you can’t dwell on that. If you dwell on that, then you can’t take the extra bag. You can’t get the big hit like Bogey did as well. So you just gotta turn the page. Obviously, we don’t want to be doing that. But, you know, turn the page. And baseball is crazy how it’ll give you an opportunity to redeem yourself.

The Diamondbacks swept a doubleheader against the Guardians yesterday and have won 14 of 18 since the All-Star break. That .778 winning percentage is second only to the Padres’ .813 .It made at least a little sense that Shildt would go to left-hander Tanner Scott to face left-handed hitter Oneil Cruz with the bases loaded and two down and the game tied in the ninth inning.

Shildt retreated toward the dugout fairly quickly while a five-minute delay ensued before the automatic ball was rescinded. While second base umpire Mike Muchlinski, who appeared to be contending the Padres were correct about Bae, spoke with Pirates manager Derek Shelton, Fletcher told Shildt he had been assessed a visit.

The 25-year-old left-hander bounced a sinker past catcher Luis Campusano on his first pitch, making it a one-run game. “I’m really ready for whatever situation they put me in,” Morejón said through interpreter Danny Sanchez. “Obviously, that situation was a little bit different than some of the other situations that I’ve been in. But really, I’m just focused on staying calm and doing my job. … Just have confidence in my stuff, maintain that confidence that I can get these guys out, go pitch by pitch, really just believe in myself and believe in the stuff.

After Machado reached on a dribbled single down the third base line with one out, Donovan Solano struck out. With Merrill down 0-2, Machado stole second. Profar was hit on the right knee by a 95 mph fastball from Hunter Stratton in the sixth inning. Profar crumpled to the ground, got up, threw his helmet in frustration and then went back down.

After two more strikeouts, Estrada got to two strikes on Pirates lead-off hitter McCutchen before Bae stole second and McCutchen drove in both runners with a single.
