On Saturday at Petco Park, Miller met with eight kids living with Type 1 diabetes.

When reliever Mason Miller arrived in San Diego last August and took in his new home, his eyes immediately locked onto a sign just to the left of the bullpen at Petco Park.
Miller was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2018 after a routine drug test for an internship revealed an alarmingly high level of glucose in his urine. Shortly after receiving the diagnosis, Miller began wearing sensors made by Dexcom, a San Diego-based company.
“This summer will be eight years of using their products,” Miller said. “It’s something that has affected and changed my life, day-to-day, for a long time. ” On Saturday at Petco Park, Miller met with eight kids living with Type 1 diabetes. The annual “Dexcom Warrior Day” brought roughly 1,000 Dexcom employees to the stadium, along with children living with the disease and their families.
Before the game, Miller — who has partnered with the company — stood in a circle with the kids as they took turns asking questions.
“What’s your favorite candy? ” Sour Patch Kids.
“It’s a rewarding experience for me,” Miller said. “I tell a lot of them, ‘It’s as cool for me to be doing this as it is for you to meet me. I know you don’t believe that, but it is. ’ I appreciate every single chance I get to do it.
” As the conversation continued, starting pitcher Michael King and his wife, Sheila, joined Miller. Sheila is a Type 1 diabetic, and the couple’s King of the Hill Foundation works to spread awareness of the disease.
“It’s such a special thing to be able to share my experience with the youth,” Sheila said. “I think for kids, especially, it’s a difficult experience. They’re trying to play sports or go to school or have fun with friends and, you know, their monitor is beeping, or their parents are down their back trying to get them to have a fruit snack or take some insulin.
“So for them to be able to see guys like Mason — Mike doesn’t have it, but he supports me with it — and for them to be able to see that these experiences can happen and they can still have a successful life and achieve their dreams, I think it’s really, really meaningful. ”“It’s awesome,” said Danilo Camacho, 11, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 7 years old.
“ tells me I can also play. ”“I don’t think that it’s a common enough thing that everybody knows about it or knows what goes into it,” he said.
“You know, I didn’t know anybody that had it. … Just having those conversations and being an example of: ‘If I can do this, I’m sure that you can do whatever you’re putting your mind to. ’ “That’s something that I’ve really tried to do with kids over the last couple years — just be a resource. To those kids, but also if somebody searches ‘athlete with Type 1 diabetes’ and I’m one of those guys that pops up.
When I was 20 and I got diagnosed, I remember doing that. ” Miller was a sophomore at Division III Waynesburg University when he was diagnosed. At the time, he was a pitcher with a 7.00 ERA pursuing a career in finance. His fastball topped out in the mid-to-high 80s.
After the diagnosis, Miller gained weight, which led to increased strength and velocity. For the first time in years, nutrients were reaching where they were supposed to instead of constantly being flushed from his body.
“It’s so cool how they all share their stories with Type 1,” said Dent, 14. “It’s cool because they’re both in the pros and they’re both some dawgs and pitching on the mound.
