In teams' first meeting since NL wild-card series, Max Scherzer survives five innings while Mets get best of Yu Darvish
There weren’t any orange towels being waved. No matter the result, the destiny of the Padres franchise was not going to be altered. It was a Monday in April.AdvertisementYu Darvish and Max Scherzer were on the mound.Because the Mets won 5-0, and the season will march on even if they win again Tuesday.
Scherzer entered the game with a 6.35 ERA through two starts and didn’t seem much sharper Monday than he had been in allowing the Padres seven runs in 4 2/3 innings on Oct. 7. The main difference was that he walked four instead of surrendering four home runs. In the first inning, Scherzer threw 23 pitches while walking two batters and being visited by catcher Tomas Nido twice and scowling innumerable times.
But a pair of two-out walks in the seventh against John Curtiss led only to Matt Carpenter’s third strikeout of the game.
