Padres' 20-year-old prospect has demonstrated this spring that he is up to handling the pressure and inevitable struggles that come with playing in the major leagues
Xander Bogaerts made his major league debut for the Red Sox at 20 years old and won his first World Series ring shortly after turning 21. He has been in the major leagues for more than a decade and knows a big leaguer when he sees him. There are two things Bogaerts sees in Jackson Merrill that speak to why Merrill is almost certainly going to be the Padres’ starting center fielder. One has to do with the uncanny confidence that seems to be inherent in Merrill ’s constitution.
Unless the Padres complete a trade or sign a veteran free agent in the next day or two, it will almost certainly be Merrill in center field and batting somewhere in the bottom third of the order on March 20, when the Padres open the season against the Dodgers at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea. There remain multiple free agent outfielders whose prices continue to fall as the season nears.
