“We can change the cultural norms that allow disrespectful words to become part of the air we breathe.” — PadmaLakshmi

Last weekend, I showed my 10-year-old daughter the video of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez issuing a powerful rebuke of sexism. She told Congress that Rep. Ted Yoho had accosted her over her views on poverty on the steps of the Capitol and called her a “f*cking bitch.” Instead of apologizing, he had appeared before Congress to cite his wife and daughters as a kind of alibi and said there had been “a misunderstanding.

How many times has a man called me a bitch? Strangers on the street have catcalled me, and their honeyed words turned to rage when I didn’t smile or thank them for their unsolicited comments on my body and face. Acquaintances and friends have used that word when angry that I did not return their romantic interest. And, as recently with Ocasio-Cortez, colleagues have summoned that particular insult when enraged that I challenged their points of view.

I get it. Sometimes it feels like it’s just not worth the trouble, especially in the street on your way to somewhere better. And sometimes it may just not feel safe to challenge a stranger.
